I currently have a couple of el-cheapo 110 J studio flash units which I want to dedicate to other use. In place of them I want to buy a couple of 400 J units. My criteria are fairly simple: I want (accurate) digital output control and a relatively fast recycle time (under 2 s at full load).

So I went looking online, and it seems that the cheapest are made (or at least marketed) by Godox. But what a choice! I've found 7 different models on eBay, inclduing 3 that they don't want to know about on their web site, and another one that's only on their web site. Price range (Australian) $150 (SK 400) to $450 (QT 400). And there's almost nothing to tell them apart! Flash duration for all models appears to be the same. The SK 400 has a recyle time of 3 s and an "adjustment range" of 1/8 to 1. The QT 400 has a recycle time of 1.2 s and an "adjustment range" of 1/128 to 1.

Is that worth the threefold price? I can get a DE 400 with the same recycle time as the QT 400 and with a 16:1 adjustment range for $200.

And about this "adjustment range". All models seem to have the same display. The DE 400, for example, runs from 5.0 to 7.0, while the QT 400 runs from 5.0 to 10.0 (but it doesn't have the third LED needed to display 10.0!). When I see those values, I think stops and tenths of a stop. But how does 5.0 to 7.0 map to 1/8 to 1 (3 stops) or 5.0 to 10.0 map to 1/128 to 1 (7 stops)?

I'm not set on Godox, but the few others I've seen (including on sites like B&H) don't look very different, and the same questions remain. If anybody can help, I'd be very grateful.

Greg
