1.
I borrowed a friends Canon DSLR recently and it did not focus very well in low light but did great shots outside. I am leaning toward Toms' suggestion on using a camera. I do not want to have to lug a lot of equipment around to do the job. My problem is going to be taking the pics in low light, at least two of my relatives have dark houses. One Aunt told me I could have all of her negatives and later I will buy a scanner to scan all of them, but now I just want to get copies of all the old photos that I would like to make my book.
I looked at the Fuji camera and I cannot afford $500 right now. Any other camera suggestions to do the job that are less expensive? I have been wanting to get the Pentax K-50 and wonder if it would work to take pics of the old photos...Thanks for all the suggestions. I will need suggestions on what scanner to use for brownie negatives when my Aunt gives them to me and my sister has all my Mother's brownie negatives.

  2.
Hi All,
I am starting a family project soon. I want to go to all my older relatives homes and scan all their old photos and maybe some negatives as well, then make a photo book of all of them with captions about the photos. I may make some prints as well. Most all the pics are black and white, some are color and I think they were taken with brownie cameras, some with 110 cameras. Some of the photos have been put in those photo books where the pics stick and you can't get them out without tearing the photo :( Any suggestions on what type of scanner to use or could I use a DSLR camera to accomplish this task. I would have to purchase the camera as I don't have one at the moment. I don't want any reflections on the photos as I tried to take some pics at my Aunt's with my iphone and could not get a good focus on the picture and there were reflections in the photos I took..
Any suggestions are very much appreciated.

  3.
Thank you all for the very good knowledgeable advice you have given me...I think with lots of practice I would learn the camera. Thanks William W for the suggestions on taking the picture at the waterfall. I was trying to find all the options you were telling me today on the camera.. the QVC shopping site was showing a newer camera so it did have the higher ISO..I think most of the shots I took were ISO 800..I thought higher ISO made a grainy picture which is why I did not use the 1600.. The reception hall did not have very good light even though it was at 330 in the afternoon...My point and shoot camera always takes horrible pictures in the same building where the reception was at the church. There was another relative there with a T3i and I don't know how her pictures turned out...she was using a zoom lens.
Thanks again, I love taking pictures, especially of flowers..

  4.
I borrowed my friends Canon XS camera a few weeks ago to take some pictures at my cousins wedding. I didn't get the camera until the day before and had to quickly look over the manual. I am an amateur and had never used a DSLR before. At the wedding I initially had the camera in auto mode and the flash kept popping up and was making shadows around the person I was taking the picture of. I switched to AV mode and tried different setting(ISO 400 AND 800 f 5.6) with it but some of the pictures were not crisp like they should be and there was blur in all the pics I took with the wedding party coming down the isle. I took quite a few pics and for the most part they are good except for the blurry ones but not as good as I would have liked.. At the reception when they were dancing I switched to sport mode to take the pictures of the dancing but most of them are blurry as well..I had seen on QVC they were showing a Canon in the sport mode saying there would be no blur when using that mode. I don't know why the pics would be blurry in sport mode...the lens on the camera is EFS 18-55mm.. Where can I find information on what settings to use in different situations? I am taking some pics of my niece's family this weekend at a waterfall..It will be around 3 to 4 p.m when I take them. Any suggestions on what settings to try to get a nice crisp picture, preferably some with some nice bokeh.. I will only have this camera for another week so would like to get some good pics with it while I have it..
Thanks for any help for this amateur.. I have used a film SLR before..

  5.
I have put on my birthday list for April of this year the K-50 kit from B & H Photo...Keeping my fingers crossed that I get it this year. With my new granddaughter arriving in June I want to have some really good photos of her and my other grandchildren..
If I get this Pentax K-50 DSLR can I use it for scanning some old photographs? I want to go to all my relatives and get copies of all their old photos and make a shutterfly photo book with all our ancestors names. TIA and thanks for all the responses, they are very much appreciated..

  6.
Thank you Lex and John for your responses and I am going to look into the K-500. It looks like a nice camera from the photos. Can I use my bayonet mount lens on the K-500?

    Frustrated

I have my Pentax film camera K-1000 SE but I can't use it anymore because of vision problems. I loved taking pictures with it until my vision got bad. I am keeping for sentimental reasons.
For two years now I have put a digital SLR on my birthday and Mother's Day list and still do not have a DSLR. I love taking pictures of flowers and of items I crochet to donate to the NICU for premature babies...I need a good camera that will take sharp pictures and sometimes in low light conditions...I also want to take some nice shots of my grandchildren when I visit them every year with nice bokeh..Right now I am using my IPod 4th generation and a Sony DSC-W180 point and shoot which takes horrible pictures in low light conditions, they are always blurry. There are so many camera's out there and everyone has good and bad reviews so it is hard to decide what is the best.
Is the X-5 worth buying or should I wait until a good deal comes around on a DSLR? I'm thinking I am not getting the DSLR as a gift because of the expense but I feel like I am worth it. So therefore the frustration?
I really would like to stay with Pentax camera's..

Thanks in advance for letting me vent...

Good evening!!

  8.
Hi Randy, Thanks for asking...Unfortunately we didn't make it to Gatlinburg this weekend for my birthday.. We only had one day to do something so we went to Amicacola State Park which was very nice and we had a nice hike through the forest and saw the beautiful waterfall but hopefully we can go to Pigeon Forge in June or July and go to Cades Cove. I want at least 3 days there to take lots of pictures. I hope it is before then but we will see. I have saved all the information everyone posted for me...
Thanks again...
