1.
I have a 7II with a silver battery cover. The history of mine is that the original battery cover was black but when it became necessary to change the batteries for the first time I had huge problems. Camera would not work.
Fortunately I was living in Japan at that time, so took it to the Mamiya service store. The guy there was obviously very familiar with the issue and simply replaced the battery cover with a silver one, and problem solved!
Apparently there are small differences in the design of batteries from different manufacturers and the original black cover didn't work with one or more of the battery suppliers. Seems like there were also small differences between the battery covers.
So my take on this issue is that a silver battery cover is the way to go.

 2.
I suggest trying a different brand of battery. There are small differences in the battery sizes even though they are supposedly identical. I had a problem several years ago when I was fortunate enough to be living near the Mamiya repair place in Tokyo. Even though the camera was then reasonably new, they simply replaced the battery cap with a different one and I have never had a problem since then. Obviously the repair folks new that the original battery cap was not compatible with all battery designs.

 3.
This is a very belated response, but hopefully might help some folks out. Several years ago I had to replace my Mamiya 7 II battery, and the camera then ceased to work with the new batteries. Fortunately I was living in Tokyo at the time so took it to their repair center.
This was an issue that they were very familiar with, and despite the language problems they fixed it almost instantly. They simply replaced the battery cover, and the camera has worked great ever since. I believe there are some minor differences between supposedly equivalent batteries and the latest battery cover design is required to handle all the variants. The replacement battery cover was silver versus the original black, but it has never bothered me, functionality is more important.
