  1. Very good lens. Picked up on ebay a few years ago for use with my F1-N
  2. Thanks all. Good idea on memory. Upgrade from 8 to 16GB was $20.00. No brainer. Hard drive is 512 GB. Upgrade to optane (HD) was $40.00. From my googling, seems like it takes the "workload" off the HD during large file transfers.... or so they say :) Intel® Core™ i7-10750H + NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1650 Ti with Max-Q design (4 GB) + 16 GB MemoryChange. 512 GB Intel® SSD + 32 GB Intel® Optane™ memoryChange
  3. Hi. Anybody use the HP Spectre x360 Laptop with the Intel i7 processor for photo editing. I plan on using it with photoshop and lightroom. Me: Newbie when it comes to photo editing. I don't think I'll be taxing the system to much... Thoughts?. Thanks all....
  4. Very nice. I see these tractors all around town now.... tobacco harvest time....
  5. I think for my initial lens I'll purchase will be the Sony 24-104/4. I like the idea of a native Sony lens, with OSS, as the lens that I'll leave on the camera most of the time. And yes, 24mm should work for my needs the majority of times at the WA fl. Once the piggy bank gets replenished, I'll most likely go with the Sigma 100-400/5.0.0.
  6. Thanks Dieter. I like the idea of sticking with a "good" Sony native lens for my walk around lens (the 24-105 vs my kit sony lens vs the tamron 28-75). I did not mention option "x"... going with all Tamron - two lenses... the 17-28 and the 28-200. That would work better at the wide focal lengths, and most of the time the 200mm would be fine, but feel I would miss the extra 200-400 mm of the sigma. (My OCD.... I'd always be thinking I need more than 200mm). And again, I like the idea of native sony glass as my walk around lens.
  7. So I am deciding on lenses for my new Sony A7rii. I currently have the sony kit lens... 28-70 f3.5-5.6. I'd really like to *buy* only 2 lenses, and keep the cost to around $2K 'ish. What would you do. Option 1: Buy the Tamron 17-28 f2.8, and Sigma 100-400 f5.0: keeping my Sony 28-70 kit lens, albeit not the greatest lens, but to fill my "only buy 2 lenses /$2K max spend" mantra: use the kit lens for my middle focal length needs. Or option 2. Buy the sony FE 24-105 f4.0 and Sigma 100-400 f5.0. I'll loose a bit in the super wide department by not having the Tamron 17-28, but will have a better walk around lens with the sony 24-105, vs the 28-70 Sony kit lens. (I can always sell the kit lens for $150.00 or so). Factoring in getting $150.00 (ish) for my kit lens, the cost for both options are similar.... maybe $100.00 or so more for option 2.. that's fine... I'm an intermediate amature, and mostly shoot landscapes, but would like to get into city scapes as well. Not interested in portraits. Tamron seems better for close up shots (Marco? ) vs any of the others, but Sony 24-105 may be good enough. (Somewhat of a consideration) Any thoughts or alternative choices on these 2 options are appreciated. I'm sure there are much better options, but I don't want to spend much more than $2K, nor start to collect Sony lenses. Thanks... Gary...
  8. I hope I am not bringing this thread back to grade school level, but.... Very novice photo editor user here, and same with my experience with the Sony a7rii.. I installed gimp, and from what I read, it does not read/edit sony raw (arw files). You need a raw editor (plug in) for that. So I installed both RawTherapee and darktable programs. (See which works better). When I open up Gimp and select my arw file, it also seamlessly opens up either rawtherapee or darktable (depending on which plug in I have active in gimp). So far ok... Seems u do your editing in rawtherapee/darktable, save as a .jpg or.tiff, and then gimp can read those files.. ? Question (and I've only been messing around with the 3 programs for a day)... why not just "stay" in rawtherapee or darktable...what is the benefit of working in rawtherapee/darktable, saving as a .jpg/.tiff and then doing more editing in gimp?. Thanks all.
  9. I'm looking to purchase the Sigma 100-400mm f/5-6.3 DG DN OS for my Sony a7rii. The lens has great reviews for the price point. I see the lens was first offered by Sigma not much more than a month ago. I read where there were some focusing issues, mainly in the movie mode, that are (or will be) addressed with a firmware update. My photography skills don't feed my family, so there is no rush to buy this lens. Would you wait a few more months to let the "first run" production bugs work their way out, before buying ?. I'm a reliability engineer for a large aerospace company... so I'm probably overthinking this. Appreciate the replies....
  10. Obviously a very specific "How to" book, but just picked up David Busch's " David Busch's Sony [alpha] A7R II/a7 II: Guide to Digital Photography". I just picked up the Camera, and this newbie/amature photographer was not too impressed with the supplied manual. And his books have good reviews... I also am learning about e-books on Kindle. :). I could not find a rii printed edition (my preference): plenty available for the A7riii, IV, but not for the older rii. (other than the one on sale on e-bay for a few hundred bucks... yea, good luck with that). So here I am with the camera in one hand, and my tablet in the other.... Big jump from my Rebel XT....
  11. Ken, I just looked at the review for the Sony E mount 24-105 F4, and it looks like a nice lens, especially for the price point. I definately don't want to start collecting Sony lens's like back in my FD days, but if I were to pick up a few Sony lens, that looks like a good one to have in the kit....
  12. I'm not ruling out buying Sony native glass by any means, just figured I'd give the Sony a try with my collection of FD lens... As an aside. There was a member that posted a lot in the Canon FD section back 4 years ago... when I was a frequent visitor of this site. He used FD glass on (I believe) a Sony NEX. His images were spectacular (at least when viewing on this site). So we'll see.... I did buy a PhotodioX adapter... seemed to have good reviews with the E-body to FD mount.
  13. Today is "NCD"... Fedex just dropped it off. I went with the Sony A7rii. The in-body IS really appealed to me, as most of my shooting will be with older Canon FD lens. The specs seem great as well, even for a 2015 model year camera. The camera should be "good enough" for this amature for years to come... (I still was using my Rebel XT !! ). Thanks all...
  14. Thanks Ken. I have the bayonet mount (think that is what its called) on my F1-N (new).. so I believe the FotodioX mount should be good. Yes. I read that the supplied 28 -70 mm kit lens is not the greatest, but it was actually cheaper to get the kit (camera, lens, memory card, etc) than without. So maybe I'll splurge. I'm a "slightly" advanced amateur, so this should last for some times... I appreciate your reply Ken. Tnx....
  15. Hello All. Longtime member, but very infrequent poster here. I own a Canon F1-N, and had a few Canon FD Lens that I purchased over the years. (Mostly mid-grade primes – 35-105, 24, 28, 50). I recently acquired quite a few more FD Lens, namely a 400MM 1: 4.5, a 80-200 1:4 L, and a 17MM 1:4. I also own an old Canon Rebel XT with a 28-105. I was already planning on upgrading to a newer Digital camera, and with the recent acquisition of more Canon FD lens, decided to go with a mirror-less Camera, as I understand they are better at adapting old non AF lens, and in particular, the SONY A7 line, with the in body IS. I am looking at the Sony A7R II , with the 28-70MM kit lens. Most of my shooting is landscape/still, and with owning a lot of FD lens, believe the 28-70MM Sony lens would suffice for those times where I need AF. Most of my shooting would be with the Canon FD lens. That being said, would you folks recommend any other camera besides the Sony A7 line. I like Canon, but again, from what I read, the Sony A7 is ideally suited for older (FD) lens….. I appreciate the help. Thanks….
