    VR or not VR

I just read "All about Nikon VR" by Thom Hogan. This confirms to me that I was doing it all wrong all this years. Have VR off unless needed and then avoid need by use of tripod. I always used VR if lens had it. It took broken VR to make me realise that now my images are so much better. There must be a reason best pro lenses do not have VR.

    VR or not VR

This image is out of the camera with no adjustments other then reducing the size for posting. It was taken hand held with D750 and 24-120 f4 at 1/2000s f/5.6 and ISO auto 160. VR was not working. The image is sharp, the birds at different distances were still well defined. The image gives impression that birds are cut outs stuck there. I am wondering if VR did work at such high shutter speed would the result be the same or less. At what shutter speed VR no longer matters and should not be used. If it is recommended VR should be disabled when using tripod it must have effect the quality. Where is the cut off point for shutter speed when VR no longer perform and when quality is impacted. I needed broken VR to learn something new.

    VR or not VR

I noticed camera shake effect in my images taken with D800 and Nikon 24-120 f4 lens. On investigating found VR has failed but it got good again later. Recently I purchased D750 and was using it with the same lens. Again VR failed but this time permanently. Repair was not economical so I changed the way I photograph by using high shutter speed and tripod when light was low. My images were never as good as now. Everything is crisp sharp near and far. I will try to avoid using VR again when ever possible but I realise in some situation it will be advantage.
  4. I have been happy user of Nikon camera's and lenses and had never had any problems. In June 2018 I purchased D750 as a back up camera for D800. At first I was happy with the camera then 50mm D lens was not recognised showing fEE error. Then build in flash would not fire after first image for about 15 seconds.Even disabling the flash and using commander mode to trigger external flash it would not fire after several images were taken and charge lights were displayed. Then my main lens 24-120 f/4 stopped working VR. VR is not working in D800 as well but 50mm lens is working fine. So something is wrong with my new D750 I took the camera and lenses to Nikon service. I was told D750 is faulty and will be fixed under warranty. Their 50mm sampe also did not work. 24-120 f/4 lens VR is faulty and needs to be repaired. I tried to blame the camera having caused some electric surge damaging the lens but service man did not agree so I will have to pay. Is it possible that I am correct? Should I insist on free repair?
  5. Recently I purchased Nikon 105 f2.8 Macro lens. I did take various photos from flowers to portraits and the results were nice. I have many Nikon lenses but this one is special. Few days a go I have seen little ant running on the bench top in the kitchen. I took D7000 with 105 lens VR was on auto focus 9 points and hand held and I could see the hairs on the ant legs in the photo. This lens is magical.
  6. Do not manual focus when testing the lens because you will introducing another variable. Image shown out of focus.for what ever reason. You could have purchased damaged lens. Take picture of a ruller at 45 degrees angle and see where is the focus point or have the lens tested by Nikon

    More then I expected

Just purchased Nikon macro f2.8 lens for portraits and some macro. It is more then have expected. See my reflection in the birds eye from the crop.
  8. Because solar eclipse is so rare most photographers would have never had opportunity to photograph it. Even Astronomer who was holding a lecture on the solar eclipse cruise has never seen one..I managed to take about 200 photos, and all were keepers. For Diamond ring only 7 photos were taken and in totality 48 photos. Camera sensor will not be damaged if you use solar filter but shade the camera between shots. Solar filter has to be removed quickly to photograph diamond ring and totality or you will miss it. Best would be to use crop sensor camera. Most important is to use in camera focus.I used D7000 with 18-200. I preset U1 for totality but was overexposed so I used auto.instead and it worked OK Attached are few photos with camera setting.
  9. Used Nikon SB800 for less then $200, New SB700 $350. Do you want to risk cooking your D500 electronics.
  10. I have photographed Solar Eclipse on a cruise in South Pacific in 2012. There are 2 important setting. bright sun with solar filter and totality without filter. As far as solar filter photography it is easy because you have time and are able to practice days before. With totality you have one chance in lifetime lasting 2 minutes.I was using Nikon D7000 with 18-200mm lens,.Solid tripod, cable release, single point auto focus. I have pre-set U1 and U2 for totality. All my images were sharp and my best image of Diamond ring was in landscape mode. Most people I spoke to have photos out of focus because of the decision to use manual focus. Don't do it. .
