Strictly nocturnal, roosts in dense evergreens in winter, sometimes incredibly tame, I located this resting owl by searching for its excrement whitewash underneath its favored daytime perch. I used bungee cords to hold back tree branches for several photographs and then removed the cords, allowing the owl to continue resting. Exposure Date: 2004:02:16 09:28:28; ImageDescription: Great Egret demonstrating its flying abilities, dropping down toward it nest at Florida's Venice rookery. Bright green lores next to eye and lacy white plumes on its back and tail indicate this bird is in breeding plumage. Unfortunately, these feathers are what almost caused the bird to become extinct. Before it was protected by law, the Great Egret was hunted and killed for those lovely white plumes for ladies hats in the early 1900's.
