3. Hi Folks, I finally selected and ordered via MPB. I have received the camera and lens I ordered. There where several pleasant surprises. The shipping was free. Both came in the OEM box. The lens had the OEM lens bag. Both had the original manuals. The camera had an extra power chord for the charger. The battery was charged and installed in the camera. (Perhaps not the best idea, but convenient when I went to fire it up.) I did have a moment of terror when I could not focus on anything with my eyes to the viewfinder. Only to discover the diopter adjustment built in. This is a feature I was not familiar with. Right now, I am very satisfied with the transaction and would do business with them again.
  4. Hi folks, since I did not receive e-mail regarding this thread I though no one had replied. I should have known better. In more recent news, I ran a second roll through and got much the same result. The difference this time is I sat down with the manual and made sure everything was correct. I had hopped that the timer function switch, which had been in V, and which is supposed to give you a 10 second delay, was the issue, but it was not. I think what is happening is that the aperture is opening again before the light baffle is properly in place. Meaning the film is exposed while it is advancing giving me a streaky, double exposure. For the sake of curiosity, I am thinking of running a third roll where I place the lens cap on before advancing the film. An obvious if awkward fix. I have also been looking at Bronica SQ prices. My very minimal research suggests Bronicas have a better build quality.

What a great shot! I would love to know more about how the picture was taken! I love the curve that the wings make in the frame. Also the way the wings are remind me of ancient Egyptian murals. I think the image would be even more striking if you cropped it so the subject was in the lower left. The contrast of the in focus subject and the out of focus background is good, but the left part of the frame has nothing in it. I would crop the left and a little off the top while leaving the right side alone. This means the curve of the birds wings define the lower left corner of the frame. Another thing is the uneven lighting of the bird. It looks like the birds head and the lower wing is in shadow. No idea what you can do about it. Possibly the lighting of the bird can be evened out using something like photoshop. I love this shot. The stuff I see in it are minor quibbles. The DOF perfectly highlights the subject while giving a nice blurred background.
  6.
Hi folks,

I have a Kowa 6. When I got it I had it CLA'd. After running 1 roll through, it sat on a shelf for around 10 years.
I took it out to the zoo with me recently and after getting the roll back, it looks like the frames only advanced 1/2 a frame instead of the full width.
The Kowa 6 can take 120 or 220 film. I had 120 film. There are two things you have to do to switch film. One is to flip a pressure plate in the back. The other is to set a frame counter to either 12 or 24. The frame counter switch apparently tells it when the end of the roll occurs so you can wind the rest on to the take up spool without having to click the shutter every frame.
I noticed part way through the frame counter was set wrong. Checking the pressure plate afterward, it is set correctly.

So, is it possible that setting the frame counter wrong caused the advance to work incorrectly?
Has anyone seen this kind of thing? How was it fixed?
Thanks!

  7.
I wanted to thank everyone who took the time to respond. The answers here were helpful!

I only recently rediscovered photo.net and it was due to great answers in the forums. (The forums came up in a search for a digital film scanner and advice about old Canon film bodies.)

Thanks again. What a great resource photo.net is!

  8. Hi Richard, I believe it was resolved. I had a "too good to be true" sense on the prices and so wanted to do more research. (OK just ask people.) Apparently the price I thought was the going rate was inflated. Or is there a new mark of the 5D out?
  9.
Do you mean MP Super Buys or MP Super Store?

I don't think mpb.com is the same bunch, although my basis for this is limited to them having different addresses. MPB has offices in New York and Brighton in the UK.

Thanks for the pointer on B&H and Adorama. When I look at their prices it isn't as far out of whack. B&H have a 5D for 399.95

  10.
Hi folks,

I am researching to decide on getting a DSLR. While doing that I found MPB.com

Their prices seem too good to be true. The Canon 5D I have been looking at goes for around $500 on EBay, but I can get on for $375 on MPB. Similar story for lenses.

There is a thread elsewhere on Photo.net about someone being initially unhappy about a MPB warranty issue, but finding out that they really coudn't fix it and just wanted to know what else he would accept.

So is MPB a reputable dealer or what?
