1. Realise it's not one of your suggested alternatives but the 24-85 G is worth considering. Produces excellent results on my D800E for "general" photography. Use it more than any other lens despite having a few good ones to choose from. Cheers - Martyn
  2. FastStone Image Viewer (windows). Also free for personal use.
  3.
Thanks for the info - works OK for me on Win7. Only had time for a quick look so far.
Anyone know how this compares with ACR?

  4.
Always use B+W UV filters on all my lenses unless there's a specific reason to remove them (usually to avoid stacking with a ND or Pol). Rather get crap on a filter than the front element, never had any problems with this. I believe some people disagree... :-)

  5.
Not new but been doing some B&W conversions... Fountains Abbey, Yorkshire.

    Absolutely fantastic image...
  7. Excellent image, just wondering where this is? Regards - Martyn
  8.
Not quite on topic, but... here in the UK adobe are currently offering a promotion on their CC photo bundle - about £83 pa (usually over £100). Finally weakened & signed up.

  9.
Sandy, thanks for the reply.

I guess I should have been more specific in the original question. The latitude/longitude data seems to be fine (which is what the 3 meter figure refers to).

The unit also gives a bearing for the direction the lens is pointing - it's that which seems to be both inaccurate & internally inconsistent.

  10.
Just got a Aokatec AK-G1s GPS unit to use with my D800. Very pleased with it in general, fits well on the camera & the positional accuracy is better than I expected. Happy to use it just for that.

But, the direction data is not so good. I have tried to calibrate it a couple of times & doesn't seem to have helped.

Question is, before I spend a lot of time messing about with the compass calibration - how accurate should I expect the direction information to be when the unit is properly calibrated? Any advice from users would be much appreciated.

Thanks - Martyn

  11.
Colin,

Nice shot - didn't realise they are so common hereabouts, don't recall ever seeing one before (not up close at any rate). Happy to see more of them, far too many pigeons... :-)

Regards - Martyn

  12.
Thanks to everyone who responded. Happy with the Sparrowhawk ID.
Regards - Martyn

  13.
Hi,
Can anyone help with the identification of this bird?
http://www.photo.net/photo/18184296&size=lg
Photo taken in Essex, England - February 2016. Caught in the act of eating a pigeon.
Thanks - Martyn

  14. I also like it, despite the lack of a "clear subject". Reminds me of parts of the English east coast. Thought it might look good in black & white... hope you don't object to the conversion.
