BIOGRAPHY
I was born and raised in a small town in central Washington state. Some of my earliest memories of being artistically aware of my environment were on trips across eastern Washington through the rolling hills of the Palouse countryラwheat land with amazing patterns of cultivation, ripening wheat, harvested and fallow fields. I became fascinated by the texture and impact of the land. I began photographing my environment in 1967 while in South Viet Nam. I wasn't so much interested in recording the war but more the imagery surrounding the war. Again, I was struck by the patterns, forms, and textures that together, elicited an emotional response. The war was vivid, chaotic, and in color; I was more interested in responding to the pure imagery surrounding me, not the content. To this end, I concentrated on black and white photography. The officer I worked for was a photography buff, and he taught me how to develop and print. We even set up our own darkroom. Because of this, I was able to control the image all the way through to the finished print. This gave me an enormous amount of satisfaction. I have never lost this love for black and white photography. Though I eventually became a professional photographer and spent many years doing weddings, portrait, and commercial work, in my second life as a college English instructor, I have returned to fine art photography as an expression of my fascination with the basic elements of the craft: form, shadow, light, and texture. No longer a "working" photographer, I revel in my rediscovered artistic freedom. Now I am my own client. I create photographs of places, people, and things that satisfy my desire for a personal response. More than "show" something to me, the image must "do" something to me, and hopefully to others that view my photographs. My interest in form and light has led me to explore the nude, and that has become my focus for the past ten years. I hold a Master's degree in English Literature and teach at Yakima Valley Community College in Yakima, Washington.
