This very famous sculpture was attacked not to long ago and now sits behind bullet proof glass.

View from top of Vatican dome. The tallest building in Rome

Another mosaic

Known by the locals as the wedding cake. As far as I can tell this building has no function whatsoever other than being a monument.

View from the very top of the Vatican. What follows are pictures mostly from within St. Peters basillica which is the most spectacular place I have ever seen. Words and pictures do it absolutely no justice. The lighting was extremely low making very difficult to get clear pictures.

The dome of St. Peter's. You can see the people up around the top behind the rail. This is the tallest structure in Rome. The view was great that day. It's a very long climb to the top. Over 500 steps. The stairway winds through the inside of the two layers/walls that make up the dome. The corridor is about shoulder width. Closterphobic adults were at the top crying because the stairway is so narrow, steep, and hot. Toward the top where the dome curves in more the walls of the stairway do the same, so you are walking leaned over about to fall.

Some of our local homeless neighbors. They pretty much live in the Piazza. They aren't quite like our homeless.

A little vino in our living room.

These are the steps to a monument in the Piazza next to the house. Rome is the dirtiest city I have ever seen. This is from one night. The street sweepers come through here every morning.

Typical Friday night view from my room. This was taken around 4am. Vegas has nothing on Rome when it comes to partying all night. Some of the pizzarias are open till 4 also and many of the bars here stay open till at least 4, some later. There is no drinking age and no open container law. I'm pretty sure this town may have more drunk drivers than any other town and more Police that sit around doing nothing. What a place!

This is the plazza our house is on. My window is the second one in from the left, on the second floor, under the street light on the big building to the left.

Ancient Trade

Leather worker in his shop.

These public fountains are everwhere. Rome still has one of the best water systems in the world. you can drink right out of it.

These are the cobblestones that cover 90% of Rome's roads. They call them Pietrinis, after the same stones that origionaly covered St. Peters square. There must be a billion of these. I asked a cop and he looked at me like I was crazy. Not crazy just too much wine maybe.
