Stock Photography
As a teenager, I remember looking at photos my mother had taken when I was 3 or 4, beach trips etc. The photos seemed to keep the memories alive. I felt fortunate that my mother had taken pictures as we were growing up./p
pWithin a year after starting full-time work, at the age of 19, I bought a Canon AT-1 35MM film camera. My mothers pictures and the memories they captured may have been the inspiration for my first camera purchase. At first I shot print film, but then I was given a roll of slide film as a gift./p
pI shot slides for about 15 years, finding the projected slide experience vastly superior to prints. In the mid 90's I bought a new film camera, a Canon Elan and shot lots of print film again./p
pIn the late 1990's I began scanning prints and publishing them to the web pages I created, which becamea href"http://www.saugus.net/Photos/" Saugus Photos Online./a Some of my crude and low quality print scans from those days are still in place./p
p In about the year 2001 I bought a Nikon Coolpix 990, my first digital. A few years later it was a Canon 10D. Now I use a Canon 5D, 7D and several Canon L lenses./p
pWith hundreds of photos published on the Net,a href"http://photo.net/photodb/member-photosuser_id215599" including those here on photo.net/a, I continue to sell rights to many images for use in magazines, text books, trade show displays, painting references, on Web sites etc../p
pI've tried a few different stock sales avenues. My "stock" here on photo.net has generated a substantial number of sales. As a result of this, I've started choosing, uploading and captioning to photo.net with stock sales in mind./p
pI don't generate the majority of my income from stock but the supplemental income encourages me to purchase new photo equipment./p
pEarlier I mentioned the roll of slide film I received as a gift. Had I not received that 1 roll of film, it's likely I'd never have started my a href"http://www.saugus.net/Photos/scanning.shtml"successful slide scanning service/a, which I've operated out of my home office since 2001./p

pI try to avoid the need for cropping pictures. The majority of images I post on photo.net are emnot/em cropped. My logic is this: If I have to crop an image to make it look its best, then I should have done it better in the camera. Since I began to sell stock photos, avoiding the need to crop became more important to me. Cropped sections of images often won't enlarge to what potential buyers might need.
I'm trying to shoot more vertical orientated images. They make for better cover photos :-
