BIOGRAPHY
Hello, and thanks for visiting my Gallery. I was born in and grew up in Orange County in southern California (where I went by the name "Randy"). I started doing landscape photography with a Canon F-1 35mm camera. I spent a lot of my free time 4-wheeling, hiking, camping and rockclimbing in the deserts and mountains of the southwest U.S. I always had my trusty Canon F-1 with me, and took lots of photos on my adventures. In 1989, I realized that southern California was too crowded for my tastes, and I moved to Boulder, Colorado to go to graduate school. Just before my move to Colorado, I acquired a 4x5 large format camera, learned the Zone System and got real serious about landscape photography. I continued to pursue landscape photography while exploring my new home. I also spent about 1.5 years in Los Alamos, New Mexico, which was a wonderful place to be a photographer. Large format photography was a lot of work compared to 35mm, but the resulting image quality justified the considerable effort. I moved to northern Virginia in 2001, and became real busy with my career and neglected my photography hobby for few years. Large format was just so much work that I found it hard to take photos on a busy work schedule, and 35mm image quality was so unsatisfying to me. In 2004, while musing over all the photos I was NOT taking, I decided to try medium format as a compromise between the ease of 35mm and the image quality of large format. I acquired a used Mamiya 7 (6x7) rangefinder system and started doing lots of shooting again. Although not quite as good as large format, I found the Mamiya 7 produces outstanding image quality with much less effort than lugging a 4x5 system around. I've taken many trips with the Mamiya 7, and produce more "keepers" than I ever did with the 4x5 or the 35mm. In the mean time, I made a decision to re-focus my lifestyle away from working alot (no one on their deathbed ever wished they had spent more time at the office), and started traveling and shooting more. I continue to enjoy lots of photo adventures including many local photo trips to the Chesapeake Bay and Blue Rdige Mountains, as well as more extended travel to Europe while I happily shoot medium format. I also have a digital P&S for when I want to do some shooting with minimal effort. I have a few images on dispaly in some local galleries; but, based on my sales, I've learned that I better keep my day job (at least for now)! Please send me an email if you have any questions about my images, photo gear, photo locations, etc. I look forward to hearing from you. --Randall
