Drottningholm

outside Stockhom by Eve Anderson

Drottningholm.

The steamboat Drottningholm, view from the steamboat Prins Carl Philip outside Stockholm There are a number of ways to get to the Drottningholm palace from Stockholm. One of the most pleasant ways is to catch the ferry at the City Hall. The ride over there takes about an hour, and you can take one of two boats: The Drottningholm or the exquisitely named Prince Carl Philip. Looking out from the boat, you will see that very much unspoiled nature remains around Stockholm.

The magnificent Drottningholm palace was begun in 1662, and was made mostly in Baroque style. The details are just breathtaking, with so much care put into each room. This is the residence of the Swedish Royal family.

Outside of the palace itself are huge gardens, the Chinese Pavilion and Drottningholm Court Theatre, and other auxiliary buildings in various styles. All are definitely worth seeing.

Re: "...This is the residence of the Swedish Royal family." Yes, it's a lovely place, and when I toured the Palace I found it interesting that the Royal Family essentially lives "in the basement", with the really grand areas open to the public. There were only a couple of guards strolling around, with no serious barriers to prevent the deranged or merely rude from entering the private exterior areas and violating the Royal Family's privacy. All in all, it seems an interesting contrast to either Buckingham Palace or the White House.

Drottningholm in the late afternoon

From here begins the visit into the park of the residence (situated to the right). The image shows the palace in late afternoon (around 5pm), under the lon g rays of the sun. The lake is situated on the other side.
