Ah! Someone is watching;-) Peter, I am indeed in a bit of a pause. I am busy planning a trip to Yellowstone National Park that I will be taking in June. I will be driving from my home in Minneapolis MN through South Dakota and on to Wyoming. On the way I will be stopping for photo shoots at (a)Badlands National Park, (b)the Crazy Horse Memorial, (c)Mount Rushmore Memorial, (d)Devil's Tower, and finally (e)numerous spots in Yellowstone National Park. I will have 3-1/2 days in Yellowstone before heading back home through North Dakota. As this will be my first visit to Yellowstone, I am really excited! God willing, I might find a way to purchase a Canon 70-200 L lens before leaving. We'll see. Anyway, I am busy researching each spot for potential photo opportunities. -Dave

Nice begining porfolio. Thanks for the critique on my photo. Did you buy the 70-200 L? I ended up with the 70-300 IS . I found the 70-2002.8 just too heavy to carry around but it is a great lens. I borrowed my friends to use and it does focus quicker. Anyway keep up the work and stop by and visit my site if you get the chance. Paul

Thanks Paul. Yes, I did get the 70-200 f/4L. I am enjoying it a lot, though there are times when I wish I had a couple of hundred more mm's (400mm). My close-up's of Grand Prismatic Spring are all done with the f/4L lens. I'm getting a real education on lenses. My Tamron 17-50mm is a good lens, but I am finding the visual acuity is very dissatisfying up around f/22. In fact, I tend to think it's worthless past f/16. I like the images from that lens much more when they are in the f/4.6 to f/13 range. The Canon L lens has a bit wider latitude, and that's to be expected, but I'm still finding f/22 undesirable on either lens [This perception, as it turns out, has some real merit, and Bob Atkins explains why in this article)]. And, I think it's true that each lens has it's own "sweet spots" where the right f/stops and focal lengths combine to provide the best ranges of DOF.

NOTE: "Infinity focus" is a focusing technique that is often overlooked or resisted (as it seems hard for the mind to believe it would actually work), but it should be seriously considered in the digital era. Please review this article over at Luminous Landscape. In wide angle shooting for landscapes, I believe it is a mistake not to include some shots taken using this focusing technique.

I like your landscapes.

Dave Englund , July 29, 2007; 06:20 P.M.

Thanks Ben. I read your bio. Don't let starting at 59 hold you back. The journey has it's own rewards! Also, I was greatly encouraged by reading an article over at Radiant Vista titled "The Myth of Talent." Sometimes when I see the fantastic stuff people at photo.net are doing I have to re-read that article to remind myself that the great majority of "talented people" were folks who just kept working their craft over the years.

Hi, Dave

You have a nice start to your portfolio, I have enjoyed browsing. I think I see a trip to Minnesota in my future! The color on your badlands images is just perfect, delicate and not over-saturated. Keep adding more.

Best regards, Tammy

Dave, I was just browsing through some of my postings from last year and came across one on which you gave a considerable critique. I must apologize for not responding to your efforts and would like to thank you for taking the time to write it. It must have been the crazy Christmas season that caught me out. I enjoyed looking at your Badlands images. I made a trip through the Canadian badlands a few years ago and found them starkly beautiful, yet difficult to photograph.
