Final Thoughts on New Zealand

by Philip Greenspun; created 1993

  • Of the hundreds of tourists I met, none of them wanted to go home no matter how long they'd been in NZ. I've been all over Europe, the Caribbean, Israel and Egypt and never failed to find a healthy percentage of people who were looking forward to going back to their homes. Germans were actually physically ill at the thought of going back. I personally had never gone away for more than three weeks, even to really nice countries like Italy without feeling a little homesick. I could easily have stayed two more months in NZ.
  • NZ is only 12 hours from LA, is probably the nicest country in the world for a tourist, and you can live there very happily for US$20/day per person.
  • go, go, go.

:-) It's strange, and I know this happens to quite a few kiwis as well. You read or hear from someone how great they found New Zealand compared to other places they've been, and you should be getting the "warm-fuzzies"... but instead it's a slight embarrasement. It's just an everyday life style and place, and the landscape normally passes by in a blur of green and white as we're driving by in the car. :-) Anyway, I've enjoyed reading through most of the stuff on this site.

Sigh, I only wished my pictures came out as well exposed as yours. : ( How come you got such clear weather???? The weather I had in Milford was wet, the weather I encountered in Mt Cook was wet, the weather I met in Fraz Josef was..............

Well guess I have to save up again..

Cheers

P.S. Kiwi women are pretty friendly, and bring along your gore-texes

Help! I went to France last year and hated to leave. Now I'm planning to go to New Zealand, and it sounds even more unleavable than France. Help!

It's all true, I'm English, have been on loads of holidays in the past when I've come back saying "Hey, that was a lovely place, let's go back there for another holiday sometime" but New Zealand is the only place I've been where I've come back and seriously thought about emigrating. We haven't emigrated, mainly because we couldn't commit to going there for ever, and it seemed like a lot of upheaval to go through for a couple of years.

I do plan to return though, for at least a 3 month (I did 3 weeks last time) visit and experience all the things that I only had chance to glance at - for instance, I would love to spend some time around the Able Tasman area kayaking.

hmmm, dreams....
